Holiday Safety Tips for National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

Drunk driver driving the car at night.

December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month and is a great time for everyone to address the dangers of drunk driving. Holidays such as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are especially deadly when it comes to drunk driving crashes. Impairment isn't just limited to alcohol; it also includes drugs, fatigue, and stress.

Despite progress such as the 0.08 BAC limit and a higher drinking age over the last few decades, alcohol-impaired drivers still cause one-third of U.S. traffic fatalities, or over 13,000 road deaths annually. Impaired driving remains a major contributor to traffic fatalities in Oklahoma, with alcohol- and drug-related crashes injuring nearly 2,500 and killing approximately 220 people each year.

What is Oklahoma doing to combat impaired driving this holiday season?

Oklahoma employs advanced training, technology, and enforcement strategies to reduce impaired driving and save lives. The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office (OHSO) collaborates with state and national partners. They use evidence-based methods such as high-visibility enforcement, regional task forces, training programs, and public awareness campaigns. OHSO also supports the Governor’s Impaired Driving Prevention Advisory Council, which helps to implement strategic plans aimed at reducing DUI-related crashes.

Additionally, Oklahoma has strict laws to deter impaired driving. A DUI conviction can result in license revocation, jail time, fines exceeding $10,000, and mandatory ignition interlock devices for offenders. First-time felony offenders face 1–5 years in prison and up to $2,500 in fines. Repeat offenses bring harsher penalties, including up to 10 years in jail and $5,000 in fines. Drivers under 21 face a zero-tolerance policy, with any alcohol in their system leading to criminal charges, license revocation, and interlock requirements.

The state also enforces a Social Host Law, which holds those who host underage drinking gatherings accountable. Violations can lead to fines, prison time, or both, particularly if someone is injured or killed as a result.

Tips to avoid drunk driving this holiday season

The holiday season is a time for celebration. To keep it that way, it's best to make safety a priority. Here are some simple tips to protect yourself and others:

  • Plan ahead: Before heading to any holiday gathering, decide how you’ll get home safely. Designate a sober driver, book a ride share or taxi, or arrange to stay overnight. If the holiday event is within a reasonable distance, consider walking (if it's safe to do so).
  • Host responsibly: If you’re hosting a party or event, offer plenty of non-alcoholic options and stop serving alcohol well before the event ends. Encourage guests to use safe transportation and intervene if you see someone about to drive while impaired by alcohol. Also, allow friends or family to spend the night if possible.
  • Educate others: Don’t let friends or family drive if they’ve been drinking. Be sure to mention the risks before your next gathering, especially if you have children or other relatives under 21.
  • Stay alert on the roads: Watch for erratic driving and keep a safe distance. Report suspected impaired drivers to authorities if it's safe to do so.
