OKC Receives $800K DOT Grant to Improve Street Safety and Reduce Fatalities

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, downtown skyline at twilight.

In 2021, there were more than 125 roadway deaths in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City has received an $800,000 action plan grant from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) as part of its Safe Streets and Roads for All program. The aim of the program is to reduce fatalities and serious injuries related to car accidents on the city's streets.

With an additional $200,000 in matching funds from the city, the grant will go towards a comprehensive plan to enhance safety for drivers, transit riders, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. The ambitious project seeks to achieve the long-term goal of zero deaths and severe injuries on Oklahoma City streets.

The comprehensive safety plan is projected to take 18 months to develop, with active participation from residents throughout the year, according to a report by KOKH FOX 25 News. Surveys and meetings will provide an opportunity for community members to voice their opinions and contribute to the development of the initiative.

Common causes of motor vehicle accidents in OKC

According to crash data from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, statewide traffic fatalities increased from 640 deaths in 2019 to 762 in 2021.

In Oklahoma City, there were 1,700 total crashes reported in 2021, resulting in nearly 2,100 injuries and 127 fatalities. Negligence was a factor in nearly all of these crashes, including accidents involving:

  • Distracted driving: When drivers take their eyes off the road or are otherwise distracted, they can easily cause an accident. This includes texting while driving, talking on the phone, eating, or even adjusting the radio.
  • Speeding: Driving too fast for the conditions or in excess of the posted speed limit can lead to motor vehicle accidents, as speeding reduces reaction time and makes it harder to stop in time to avoid a collision. Don't forget — the faster you go, the smaller your margin for error.
  • Impaired driving: Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can significantly impair a driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely. Impaired drivers are more likely to cause crashes due to their lack of control and slower reaction times.
  • Reckless driving: Reckless driving includes weaving in and out of traffic, failing to yield, tailgating, and other dangerous maneuvers that increase the likelihood of an accident.
  • Failure to adjust for poor weather conditions: In Oklahoma City, drivers must contend with weather conditions that make driving more challenging. Heavy rain, fog, and ice can make roads slippery and reduce visibility, leading to crashes.
  • Vehicle malfunctions: It's essential to keep up with routine maintenance and promptly address any issues with your vehicle to avoid accidents caused by malfunctions, such as faulty brakes or defective tires.

Remember, no matter how safely you drive, it only takes one negligent driver to cause a devastating car accident that leaves you or someone you love with a severe injury.

Crash victims have recourse through the civil justice system, but insurance companies and their lawyers are known for trying to minimize the amount of compensation victims deserve. That's because insurance companies are for-profit businesses, and they have a financial interest in paying out as little as possible.

A car accident lawyer can protect your rights

Insurance adjusters use a variety of tactics to reduce compensation owed to a crash victim. For example, they may try to blame you for the accident or downplay the severity of your injuries. They may even pressure you into accepting a quick settlement offer before all your damages are fully assessed.

That's why you need an experienced attorney to protect your rights, deal with the at-fault driver's insurance company, and fight to secure the outcome your case deserves.

If you were injured in an Oklahoma City crash that wasn't your fault, the legal team at Lawter & Associates Attorneys at Law PLLC is here to help.
