Oklahoma City Moves Closer to Vision Zero Traffic Safety Plan

Downtown Oklahoma City skyline with modern high-rise buildings, historic architecture, and a bright blue sky with wispy clouds.

Car accidents happen every day, and too many of them end in tragedy. Whether it’s a distracted driver, speeding, or dangerous road conditions, there are many risks. In places like Oklahoma City, where traffic accidents claim too many lives each year, something needs to change. That’s where Vision Zero comes in.

Vision Zero is a safety initiative to eliminate fatal and serious car accidents by making roads safer for everyone—drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. Oklahoma City is now working on supporting this important initiative.

What is Vision Zero?

According to Vision OKC, Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility. First implemented in Sweden in the 1990s, Vision Zero has proved successful across Europe — and now it’s gaining momentum in major American cities.

7 high-risk roads in OKC targeted for safety improvements

Certain roads in Oklahoma City pose a higher risk for drivers and pedestrians due to heavy traffic, high speeds, and other factors. As part of the Vision Zero initiative, the OKC Planning Department has identified key areas where improvements are needed to reduce accidents and save lives. According to the Oklahoma City Free Press, the following seven roads have been flagged as some of the most dangerous in the city—places where Vision Zero efforts will focus on making travel safer for everyone:

  • NE 23rd Street from I35 to N Bartell Rd.
  • NW 23rd Street from N Ann Arbor Ave. to N 144.
  • Mustang Road from Reno Ave. to SW 59th St.
  • SW 44th Street from I44 to Johnston Dr.
  • S Pennsylvania Ave. from SW Grand to SW 59th St.
  • NW 10th Street from County Line Rd. to N Rockwell Ave.
  • NW Expressway from N Counci Rd. to N Wilshire Blvd.

What’s causing accidents in OKC?

Residents in Oklahoma City have voiced concerns about the following dangerous driving habits that contribute to serious and fatal accidents:

  • Running red lights at intersections: A split-second decision to speed through a red light can lead to a devastating T-bone or head-on collision. Pedestrians and cyclists crossing are also at extreme risk when drivers ignore traffic signals.

  • Not signaling at intersections: Failing to use turn signals might seem like a minor issue, but it creates confusion and increases the likelihood of crashes. When drivers don’t signal their turns, others on the road have no warning of their intentions. This can lead to sudden stops, swerves, and dangerous right-of-way misunderstandings, all of which contribute to accidents.

  • Speeding: Speeding reduces reaction time and makes it harder to stop in time to avoid a crash. It also increases the force of impact, making accidents more severe and potentially fatal.
