Oklahoma Teen Driver Tragedies Spark Safety Awareness Efforts

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving accidents resulted in over 3,300 deaths across the United States in 2022. Teen drivers are also especially susceptible to distracted driving, which often results in severe and fatal car accidents.

In Oklahoma, teen driving safety is under the spotlight as the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office reports 52 teenage fatalities in car crashes last year. A recent tragedy highlighted this issue, showing that the problem extends beyond distracted driving.

In August, 16-year-old Gage Nunes died in a Collinsville crash, leaving the Lee family with injuries. Investigators found that Nunes was driving under the influence at the time of the fatal crash.

National Teen Driver Safety Week ran from October 20-26 this year. While it already passed, it's important to reflect on its message. It encourages parents to keep themselves and their teens accountable for safe driving. The week aims to boost awareness and prompt open conversations on driving responsibilities between parents and their young drivers.

Why is distraction a leading factor in teen car accidents?

While driving under the influence is a serious issue for younger drivers, distraction remains the biggest contributor to car accidents involving teen motorists. The National Roadside Safety Foundation (NRSF) reports that 60% of teens drive distracted, which is double the rate of all drivers. David Reich from the NRSF says that teens often lose focus due to phones, adjusting music, or interacting with their passengers.

Each type of distracted driving increases the risk of a car accident by diverting the driver's attention from the road. The three types of distracted driving include:

  • Visual distractions: This involves taking eyes off the road, even for a few seconds. This brief lapse can lead to missing events, such as a car suddenly stopping or a pedestrian crossing the street.
  • Manual distractions: This requires taking hands off the wheel for things such as eating, adjusting the radio, or handling a cell phone. With hands off the wheel, drivers have reduced control over the vehicle.
  • Cognitive distractions: This happens when a driver's mind wanders. This can stem from daydreaming, intense conversations, or even stress. It can lead to delayed reactions and poor decision-making.

How can parents help reduce risky driving behaviors?

The NRSF suggests parents have a frank, heartfelt conversation with their teens about the responsibility that comes with driving. Reich advises starting the talk with empathy. For example, "I'm not trying to be bossy; I'm not trying to be a pain, but I love you. I don't want to get a call in the middle of the night or have a police officer at my door late at night with this horrendous news. That would destroy me," said Reich.

Setting clear boundaries can help limit distractions. Parents can restrict the number of passengers their teen transports and establish a “no-phone zone” in the car. This is a great way to reinforce the idea that safety comes first, not just for their teens but for everyone on the road.
